What is a single-use vial?
A single-use vial contains product for one draw operation, after which any unused volume must be discarded. Used for products without antimicrobial preservation (e.g., sterile water for injection) or for products where multi-dose handling is contraindicated.
What the research literature says
The single-use vial format reflects products that lack the antimicrobial preservation needed to maintain sterility across multiple punctures. Once the rubber septum is broken at the first draw, the sterile barrier is compromised; any unused volume is at risk of microbial growth from the moment of first puncture and must be discarded.
The standard examples in peptide-research contexts: sterile water for injection (WFI in single-use sterile containers, no preservative) and some patient-dose-specific pharmaceutical preparations. For research-peptide reconstitution, sterile water for injection is the alternative diluent when benzyl-alcohol incompatibility is a concern; the single-use constraint imposes a different operational workflow (reconstitute, draw full volume, use immediately) compared to the multi-dose bacteriostatic-water workflow.
The USP <797> general chapter on sterile compounding covers single-use vial handling. The Beyond-Use Dating framework is short for single-use products (1 hour for ISO Class 5 compounded preparations under standard environmental conditions).
Why this matters in research context
